We need to convince our fellow librarians and faculty colleagues that change is essential, it is in their best interest, and it merits action…. If ever we had a chance to help break the old mold and design a new one for the future, this is that time…. It appears that electronic publishing may well reduce the stranglehold of monopolies and, at least for a time, restore a freer free market…. By working with faculty colleagues, we can play a role in controlling the supply of resources to various publishing vehicles as well as the way they are accessed. If we do not take a part in this revolution, we will surely be its victims…. [via Open Access News]

- Nature Clinical Practice Nephrology (official publication of the International Society of Nephrology. Und was wird aus deren Kidney International? Da gibt es doch eine gewisse Überschneidung: It publishes original research in both basic science and clinical medicine.)

Zugangsprobleme bei Nature
Nach massiven Zugangsproblemen hat die NPG ihre Website vorerst ohne jedes Access Control System geöffnet. (Ausnahme: News@Nature.com, deren Artikel aber auch über die Homepages anderer Nature branded Journals verlinkt sind). Wer also mal die neusten Ausgaben von Nature Clinical Practices oder anderes anschauen möchte, hat jetzt gute Gelegenheit … [gestern Abend per E-Mail] Was Nature dazu sagt, entbehrt nicht einer gewissen Komik (Logik?) … The problem some members of your consortia are experiencing currently is being caused by a recent fix to the Access Control System we employ, which was made to correct the problems that occurred last week with the online access.
