NRW startet „Digital Peer Publishing“-Initiative
Das NRW-Wissenschaftsministerium hat im Rahmen der „Digital Peer Publishing“-Initiative die Bildung von acht elektronischen Open Access-Fachzeitschriften an seinen Universitäten mit 600.000 € gefördert. In fünf Jahren wissen wir mehr, ob diese – im Vergleich zu kommerziellen Neugründungen – Kleckerförderung etwas dauerhaft bewirkt hat. [via Heise Online News]
Geneva Declaration on the Future of the WIPO
Die IFLA hat zusammen mit einer Gruppe von Organisationen an einer Deklaration über die Zukunft der WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) gearbeitet, die nun – kurz vor der Vollversammlung der WIPO – im Internet veröffentlicht wurde. Die IFLA ist sehr besorgt, dass More restrictive intellectual property laws, technological protection mechanisms and digital locking-up devices, as well as the overriding of permitted ‚fair use‘ applications by contractual enforcement, have created serious barriers to accessing information and promoting research and innovation. IFLA is particularly concerned that the legitimate professional activities of libraries are being seriously hampered in the process.
Im Text der Deklaration finden wir: Technological measures designed to enforce intellectual property rights in digital environments threaten core exceptions in copyright laws for disabled persons, libraries, educators, authors and consumers, and undermine privacy and freedom. [via EAHIL-L]

Aus EAHIL-L (subscription required): The Health Science Library Partnerships Committee of the Medical Library Association’s International Cooperation Section would like to announce the launching of the group’s Website. This Website is envisioned as a resource to encourage and facilitate library partnerships between institutions in developing and industrialized countries.
EAHIL-Mitgliedschaft ab 2006 kostenlos
Wie der deutsche EAHIL-Vertreter, das Council-Mitglied Dr. Friedhelm Rump, in medibib-l erklärte, wird die EAHIL-Mitgliedschaft ab 2006 kostenlos sein. Die jährliche Mitgliedsgebühr in Höhe von € 50.- wird dann wegfallen. Als Mitglied bekommt man die EAHIL Newsletter (Namensänderung steht kurz bevor) kostenlos zugeschickt.
Wie wird man Mitglied? Entweder nimmt man an einer EAHIL-Tagung teil oder man sucht zwei Mitglieder, die den eigenen Mitgliedsantrag unterschreiben. Letzteres, an GMail und Herrenclubs erinnernde Ritual soll gewährleisten, dass das neue Mitglied ein Health Information Professional ist und kein „14-jähriger Internetnutzer, der sich nur einen Spaß erlaubt.“ (so die Befürchtungen des EAHIL Boards)
Symposium on Open Access to Knowledge and Scholarly Communication
Aus EAHIL-L (subscription required): The University of Zurich and the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences are pleased to announce the date and program for the Symposium on Open Access to Knowledge and Scholarly Communication Zurich, October 15, 2004. The main objective of the forthcoming symposium will be to familiarize the Swiss educational and scientific community with the idea of open access publishing and to promote an informed discussion. The program seeks to address a number of aspects of open access, including research impact, peer review, self archiving, technical aspects, legal implications, effect on libraries and the publisher’s point of view.
