Wie schon öfters prophezeit (zuletzt hier) hat die „BioMed Central Group“ nun endlich einen neuen Eigentümer gefunden, es ist Springer Science+Business Media. In einem Brief an die Editoren der BMC-Zeitschriften schreibt der Geschäftsführer Matt Cockerill dazu:
BioMed Central Group comprises BioMed Central Limited, Chemistry Central Limited, PhysMath Central Limited, Genome Biology Limited, Genome Medicine Limited, Sciencenow Limited and Current Controlled Trials Limited. This group of companies includes all the open access journals published by BioMed Central with the exception of Cases and the Journal of Medical Case Reports.
BioMed Central Limited will remain an autonomous operating unit within Springer Science+Business Media, reporting directly to Peter Hendriks, a member of Springer’s STM Management Board. [Springer’s] acquisition of BioMed Central Group indicates the growing significance of open access publishing.
In der Pressemeldung von Springer (eine von BMC ist noch nicht online) kommt neben grundlegenden Angaben zu BMC (Revenue of EUR 15 million per year, 150 employees) Derk Haank, Springer’s CEO, zu Wort:
This acquisition reinforces the fact that we see open access publishing as a sustainable part of STM publishing, and not an ideological crusade. We have gained considerable positive experience since starting Springer Open Choice in 2004, and BioMed Central’s activities are complementary to what we are doing. Additionally, this acquisition strengthens Springer’s position in the life sciences and biomedicine, and will allow us to offer societies a greater range of publishing options.
Open Access scheint jetzt wirklich im Mainstream angekommen zu sein. Es ist keine Ideologie, sondern nur ein weiteres Geschäftsmodell, mit dem sich Profit machen läßt. So läuft das hier in der Marktwirtschaft. Punkt.
