MLA grant and scholarship opportunities

MLA offers a variety of grants and scholarships to assist qualified students in graduate library science programs and to enable practicing health sciences librarians to take advantage of opportunities for continuing professional development. The deadline for applications is December 1, 2010, unless otherwise noted.

Continuing Education Grant
Applications due December 1, 2010

The Medical Library Association (MLA) is now accepting applications for the Continuing Education (CE) Grant. The grant can be used to develop one’s knowledge of the theoretical, administrative, or technical aspects of librarianship, and may be used either for MLA courses or for other CE activities. Applicants should have 2+ years of professional library experience. Awards range from $100 to $500 and more than one CE award may be offered in a year. Cunningham Memorial International Fellowship DONE
Applications due December 1, 2010

Applications are now being accepted for the Cunningham Memorial International Fellowship. The Fellowship is awarded annually to health sciences librarian from countries outside the United States and Canada. The fellowship provides for attendance at the MLA 2012 Annual Meeting in Seattle, Washington and travel to library host sites in the United States and Canada. David A. Kronick Traveling Fellowship
Applications due December 1, 2010
The Kronick Fellowship provides $2000 to an experienced librarian to support travel and research promoting excellence in health sciences librarianship. The award covers expenses for traveling to three or more medical libraries in the United States or Canada for the purpose of studying a specific aspect of health information management. Donald A. B. Lindberg Research Fellowship
Application deadline is November 15, 2010

MLA is now accepting applications for The Donald A. B. Lindberg Research Fellowship
The purpose of this fellowship is to fund research aimed at expanding the
research knowledgebase, linking the information services provided by librarians to improved health care and advances in biomedical research. The endowment will provide a *$10,000* grant, awarded by MLA through a competitive grant process, to a qualified health sciences librarian, informatician, health professional, researcher, educator, or health administrator. Research, in alignment with MLA’s research agenda’s top ranked research questions, is preferred over other areas of research and is located at http://www.mlanet.org/research/agenda_2008.html. EBSCO/MLA Annual Meeting Grant

The EBSCO Annual Meeting Grant http://mlanet.org/awards/grants/ sponsored by EBSCO Information Services, enables MLA members to attend the association’s annual meeting. Each year, grants of up to $1,000 for travel and meeting-related expenses are given to four librarians. Applicants must have between two to five years‘ experience in the profession at the time of the MLA ’11 annual meeting to qualify. Hospital Libraries Section/MLA Professional Development Grant

Medical Informatics Section/MLA Career Development Grant

The Medical Informatics Section (MIS)/MLA Career Development Grant provides one recipient with an award of $1500 in support of a career development activity that contributes to advancement in the field of medical informatics. Applicants must have an MLS or equivalent degree and it is preferred the applicant is a member of the MLA MIS Section. MLA Research, Development, and Demonstration Project Grant

The MLA Research, Development, and Demonstration Project Grant is awarded annually to support projects that will promote excellence in the field of health sciences librarianship and information sciences. Grants will not be given to support an activity that is operational in nature or has only local usefulness. Grants range up to $1,000 and more than one grant may be awarded in a year. MLA Scholarship

The Medical Library Association is accepting applications for its annual scholarship.
The award provides up to $5,000 to a student who shows excellence in scholarship and potential for accomplishment in health sciences librarianship. MLA Scholarship for Minority Students

The MLA Scholarship for Minority Students Jury is accepting applications for 2010-2011.
A scholarship of up to $5000 will be granted to a minority student in a Masters program at an ALA-accredited Library School. The runner up will receive a $1000 scholarship to attend the MLA 2011 in Minneapolis, MN.
